Anxiety tends to be rooted in things outside of one’s control, such as events from the past, hypotheticals about the future, or being rejected by others. While many who suffer from anxiety often work hard to anticipate their triggers and minimize exposure, this tends to backfire over time, by building a template of avoidance. In therapy, clients have the opportunity to learn healthy coping skills and build the confidence to safely lean into their anxiety. Once we understand where it comes from, we can work to name it, claim it, and tame it!
